An epidemic disease of unknown cause found in Wuhan, China was first reported to the World Health Organization Office in China on 31 December 2019. Shortly after, it was found that the ongoing pandemic is an infectious disease caused by the coronaviruses, a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as MERS and SARS. The outbreak was declared as a Public Health Emergency worldwide on 30 January 2020. Based on its geographic spread, severity of illnesses it causes, and also its impact on society, on March 11, 2020, COVID-19 was declared as a pandemic outbreak by WHO. “Since the wide spread of COVID-19 has been the antecedents of economic changes, social norms, and so on”, Dr. Amir Talaei-Khoei says.

Vaccines play a significant role in limiting the consequences and damages caused by COVID-19. “There have been wonderful and effortful advancements in developing vaccines, however a wholistic vaccination campaign understanding the people in need and location in priority is crucial”, Amir Talaei-Khoei says.  There have been discussions around the globe to formulate a good strategy for vaccination.

Dr. Amir Talaei-Khoei believes that artificial intelligence and the use of data techniques can help prioritizing not only the people in need but also the locations that are crucial in vaccine deployment. Data enables strategies for distribution of vaccine can relate COVID-19 data and lifestyles to a successful deployment of this vaccine. Talaei-Khoei encourages government agencies and public sector to consider this option to enable data-oriented decisions on this important matter in the world.
