Photographer Joan Cusick Captures Exhibit S Closing

A photo essay by documentary photographer Joan Lollar Cusick chronicles the final days of Exhibit S – an experimental art gallery, studio and event spot in Sacramento’s Downtown Plaza.

The photo essay, entitled “EXIT: The Closing Days of Exhibit S,” is available as a printed book and free ebook featuring gallery cofounder Tre Borden on the cover. The book includes 23 color photographs with quotes and brief narrative. The corresponding ebook is enhanced with three video slideshows focusing on Borden plus Exhibit S artists Maren Conrad and Erika Lipkes.

After opening in June 2013 with much fanfare and promise, Exhibit S ended its successful run last January with a closing party that drew hundreds of supporters. The gallery was one of several small businesses forced to yield space for the Sacramento Kings’ planned downtown arena.

“For seven months, we were fortunate enough to showcase what I believe to be the best that Sacramento has to offer: countless examples of creative brilliance, entrepreneurship and collaboration celebrating our community’s depth of diversity and complexity,” said Borden, who was the business manager for the space. “Through art shows, parties, Kulture Keggers, pop-up dinners, brand launches, art talks, tea parties, musical performances and installations, Exhibit S was a truly unforgettable experience that left a big impact during its brief moment in time. We are so glad that Joan was able to capture some of our last moments, and the book is a perfect homage to what was truly a special place."
