The Mass General Brigham study analyzed the pupil dilation and facial muscle movements of individuals with tinnitus during exposure to pleasant, neutral, and unpleasant sounds. They analyzed this data, assisted by AI technology, and discovered detectable patterns. In patients with severe tinnitus, the pupils became dilated with exposure to all types of sound, indicating a state of distress. Patients with less severe tinnitus showed milder responses. Only upon exposure to unpleasant sounds did they experience pupil dilation and detectable facial reactions.

"While we still don't have all the answers, this study puts us one step closer to determining which tinnitus treatments work," stated Curtis.
