Moringa enjoy worldwide popularity thanks to its uniqueness and antioxidant-rich nutrition profile. But the bounty of nature alone is not enough to keep pace with the heavy demand for this miracle , superfood providing tree. Success depends on the introduction of new cultivars to meet the changing needs of consumers as well as growers. And for more than a decade, Advanced Biofuel Center (ABC) has been a key player in bringing new Moringa  varieties to the developers.

Since the early 2003, Moringa  have been commercially grown in Moringa India’s Research farm, and today the tiny leaves and seeds are big business. In 2011, ABC has unveiled the Moringa oil industry’s most productive seeds worldly known as MOMAX3, which promise to deliver three times the yield of the industry average.

DP Maharshi is a true believer, at least when it comes to Moringa.

Maharshi, who founded a Superfood company Moringa India, is convinced Moringa will be the next crop of Century.

There’s only about 50,000 acres of Moringa so far, but Maharshi envisions a much larger number in the near future.

“I think there’s going to be an explosion in acres in a couple of years,” said Maharshi, founder and president of Moringa India an arm of Advanced Biofuel Center.

Moringa India is a Moringa breeding and production company that develops new varieties of Moringa and engages developers/ farmers to grow the oilseed.

For years Maharshi and his team have been developing new perennial variety  for the oilseed Moringa crop and have introduced world’s highest yielding variety MOMAX3 Moringa for plantation for seed oil purpose.

Moringa acres in 2017 are 30% more compared to 2016, but Moringa India has posted a string of successes over the last 24  months in the area of improved cultivar  and technology:

“Their successive technology and market milestones over the past few years sparked investment interest,” said Mr. Maharshi, Moringa India President.

“Their sustainable Moringa ingredients have garnered the most attention, but we like their diversity into several different revenue streams like superfood, cosmetic, pharma, medicinal, animal feed and aquaculture, based on a foundation of advanced agronomy, improved MOMAX3 Moringa cultivar  and solid economics.”

The efforts  of Moringa  India in Moringa breeding has increased access to healthy, antioxidant-rich leaves, fruit, seed and oil for families around the world,” says Dr Abhilasha, executive director of Moringa India.

“We have set the bar for Moringa  exploitation ,” Maharshi says. “Our  varieties have done very well here and there, and they’ve started to go all over the world and change the types of Moringa  that people grow.”

They’ve spread from India to the Africa, Latin America  and as far away as Nicaragua

A MORINGA EVOLUTION

ABC’s new seeds promise to increase yield from two to three tonnes of Seeds per hectare per year for a tree of prime age, to more than 8 tonnes—more than three times the industry average. The average yield of Moringa oil Seeds elsewhere in world has been stagnant at around less than one tonne of seed per hectare per year.

The new seeds will also enable Moringa trees to reach maturity much faster. MOMAX3 Moringa tree starts to bear fruit four months after planting and will produce a higher ratio of oil, according to ABC.

The MOMAX 3 Moringa seedlings are expected to yield 8-10 tonnes of Seeds per hectare with 2 harvest per year

“The interest from growers in acquiring MOMAX3 Moringa has been extremely high. They see it as providing them with a competitive edge because of its characteristics.” said Mr. Maharshi, president and chief executive officer of ABC & Moringa India.

“MOMAX3 will give our growers a competitive advantage in the marketplace, maximize returns for our growers.” he further added

The company says the seeds are also more resistant to disease and drought.

An ABC spokesperson said that the seeds, which have been in development for more than nine years, have not been genetically modified and were developed through scientific selection method.

The seeds have been introduced to ABC’s own plantations first and after having amazing results: More than expected yield, later made available to independent growers/farmers

Dp Maharshi has described the new seeds as a “breakthrough” that was essential to delivering sustainable production of Moringa Seed oil to meet growing global demand.

After 12 years of trials, MOMAX3 cultivar  emerged with results that exceeded ABC’s expectations.

“As a developer, I’m most proud of the variety,” Maharshi says. “We first released it  in 2008, and they’ve all done extremely well, and in the last nine years we have continued our research, trials for further enhancement and we’ve released improved MOMAX3 in 2011.

“I walk up and down the Moringa  rows once a week to observe them at different times of the season and I take notes on every plant,” Maharshi says. “We need to identify the ones that are consistently great over the years. They need to be exceptional.”

A Moringa  plant must meet a long list of qualifications to be deemed exceptional by Maharshi, including number of pods per plant , no of seeds per pod, weight, flavor, color, firmness and size of pods/seeds. The plant shape and size  is also important to meet harvest techniques and  yield parameters

“We’ve infused new blood into the Moringa  industry with MOMAX3 Variety” added Mr. Maharshi
