A popular summer time job for many teens is babysitting, but it implies a lot of responsibility. To help parents and the community, Intermountain Health is offering a Super Sitter Safety babysitting classes for kids ages 10 to 15.

Parents leaving their child in the care of a teenager want to know if their sitter can respond quickly and appropriately in case there is an emergency. The 90-minute in-person class engages children and teens in actively learning to know what to do, including:

  • Hands on emergency training for a choking infant or child
  • Hands on emergency training on how to perform basic infant and child CPR (not a certification)
  • How to calm a crying infant
  • How to feed, burp, and diaper an infant
  • How to plan age-appropriate activities that are safe and fun
  • What items to include in a babysitting kit
  • How to effectively and safely communicate with adults
  • How to understand their boundaries while babysitting
  • Access to online Super Sitter resources

“Participants in this class learn everything from how to protect the children in their care, when to call 9-1-1, and how to properly change a diaper,” said Natalie Godfrey, community health coordinator at Intermountain McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden. “The overall goal is to make sure the children are in good hands and provide peace of mind for parents.”

The $35 classes are available throughout the Wasatch front from Ogden to Provo at the following Intermountain Health Hospitals:

“We are giving these babysitters a very broad spectrum of safety topics in hopes of building their confidence,” said Godfrey. “We are also giving them tools in their pockets to help them be successful for a very long time.”

Each registrant receives their own babysitting bag, which includes a booklet that summarizes the information discussed in class.
