UNM Pitches $39 million in GO Bond Projects including Health Science Center for November Vote

As the largest school in the state, the University of New Mexico usually proposes the largest number of GO Bond projects.  This year it is pitching five projects for a total of 39 million including a new health science center with a price tag of 12 million for planning, design, and construction.  Other projects include 20.5 to renovate the Farris Engineering Building, and 4 million for a health career training center at UNM’s Taos campus.

Should these bonds pass, more much-needed construction jobs will be generated for New Mexicans.

UNM’s bond project proposals, along with all of the other higher education projects proposed under Bond C, are placed on a state-wide ballot every two years and have almost always passed.

Most years, with the exception of 1990 and 2010, the GO Bonds have been passed, usually in the 55-50 percent range, according to Gerald Burke, the chairman of the GO Bond for Education Committee.

UNM has other projects in the works outside of the GO Bond proposals, including a $4.9 million clinic in the North Valley, a growing, multigenerational segment of Albuquerque.  Construction is expected to begin on this project very soon.

The North Valley Center for Family and Community Health  is expected to be open and providing services by spring of 2015.  The clinic will provide a multitude of health care services including counseling, financial aid counseling, as well as health education classes.  The building will also include nearly two dozen exam rooms, a pharmacy, laboratory, and radiology suite.
