Unique NYC St. Patrick’s Day Recommendations from Curators on Seek App

Skip the overdone spots this St. Paddy’s Day and head to one of these little known Irish gems recommended by Seek curators.

1. First on the docket is of course an Irish pub. Shades of Green (recommended by @mileyinmanhattan) is as Irish a pub as they come.  With a facade as green as the hills of the Emerald Isle and a limitless supply of Guinness on tap, this place oozes Irish charm.  The bartenders here also have an endless supply of Irish hospitality, and according to Miley, they are “so chill that you can literally show up with your own takeout.”  If you refuse to carry food while bar hopping, however, fear not!  The authentic bangers & mash and shepherd’s pie here will instantly transport you to a grandma’s kitchen in Dublin and serve as a delicious respite between Guinnesses.

2. Next up is an old New York landmark seeped in Irish Catholic lore.  The Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral (recommended by @_queen.sav_) is the original Cathedral of the Archdiocese of New York before the famous new St. Patrick’s was built on 5th Ave, and was the heart and soul of the New York Irish community in the 1800s.  It was also the home of John Hughes (nicknamed “Dagger John”), an Irish American who became the first Archbishop of New York and in the 1840s fortified the cathedral walls with daggers and other weapons against anti-Catholic mobs.  Secret tip: you can take a tour of the catacombs beneath the church and hear fascinating stories of the rich and famous resting there.  Email us at help@seekrecs.com if you would like more info on the tour!

3. Lillie’s Victorian Establishment (recommended by @karlye.whitt) has one of the most unique and stunning interiors of any New York restaurant.  The authentic antique marble bar and ornate opulent furnishings, which are rarely seen on this side of the Atlantic, were procured from a Victorian mansion in Belfast and the entire atmosphere harkens back to a bygone area of Irish glamour.  Forget real life for a couple hours and step into 1800s Irish high society with one of Lillie’s signature cocktails (all named after famous Irish women).

4. Last but definitely not least is Rumours Bar & Grille (recommended by @james.oblak) (and of course we have to close with another Irish pub).  Rumours, located in the heart of Hell’s Kitchen, has been a stable for local residents for 20 years.  Spacious with multiple big screens and 25+ different beers available, this is where those who live in the area go to watch games and celebrate holidays. James notes that his favorite dish here is the chicken mozzarella sandwich, which is “grilled to perfection with lots of fresh mozzarella and fresh peppers.”
