Tonya Johannsen selected as Top Attorney of the Year by IAOTP

With more than 30 years of professional experience as a talented Attorney, Ms. Johannsen has certainly proven herself as an accomplished professional and expert in the field. She is a dynamic, results-driven leader who has demonstrated success and advancement throughout her entire career. Ms. Johannsen specializes in commercial litigation with a focus on the construction and banking industries.

Ms. Johannsen has an impressive repertoire of prior roles including her title as Shareholder and Associate for Winstead PC from 1983-1998. At her next endeavor she made Partner at Akin, Grump, Strauss, Hauer & Feld, 1998-2008. She performed as General Counsel while working for The Beck Group, 2008-2019. Ms. Johannsen spent two years in a leadership role with Estes, Thorne & Carr and currently isa Shareholder at Canterbury LLC. .

Her areas of legal expertise include Architecture, Appellate, Business Torts, Construction, Compliance, Complex Commercial Litigation, Financial Institutions Litigation, Foreclosures, Insurance Coverage, Outside General Counsel Services, Real Estate Litigation, and Strategic Business Initiatives.

Additionally, Ms, Johannsen is a member with the State Bar of Texas, a fellow with the Texas Bar Foundation, a member of the Dallas Bar Association, a fellow of the Constitution Lawyers Society of America. and a member of the American Bar Association. She is a sought-after speaker who provides insight and lends her knowledge to colleagues and professionals nationwide.

Ms. Johannsen attended Eastern New Mexico University and graduated Cum Laude in 1976 receiving her B.A. She continued her studies and earned her Juris Doctorate from Texas Tech University School of Law in 1983.

Throughout her illustrious career, Ms. Johannsen has received many awards, accolades and has been featured in numerous publications for her outstanding leadership and commitment to those she serves. This year she will be considered for a feature article in TIP (Top Industry Professional) Magazine and was chosen as Top Attorney of the Year by the International Association of Top Professional (IAOTP). Ms. Johannsen will also be considered for the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award given by IAOTP. She was recognized as one of the 100 Best Litigators to Watch; she earned the Outstanding Alumni Award from the Texas Tech School of Law and was listed in D Magazine as one of the Best Lawyers for Construction and Commercial Litigation in both 2020 and 2021. In 2021, Ms. Johannsen has also been named as one of the Best Lawyers in America. Ms. Johannsen has an AV Preeminent rating from Martindale-Hubbel for the past 25 years, is one of Dallas Business Lawyers 100 Best Litigators in Dallas and was honored as Dallas Top 50 General Counsel Awards.

Furthermore, Ms. Johannsen volunteers her time and legal expertise to offer counseling and advocates for victims of sexual abuse and violent crime. She has spent more than 25 years as a member of Attorneys Serving the Community, and she is the former president for the non-profits Bryan’s House and Victims Outreach.
