With distracted driving playing a significant role in traffic accidents nationwide, Tingey Injury Law Firm is urging Nevada drivers to redouble their efforts to stay focused on the road in observance of Distracted Driving Awareness Month.
For the past 50 years, auto accident attorneys at Tingey Injury Law Firm have been providing Las Vegas residents with legal representation and counsel. They help car crash victims get the best medical care and stand up fearlessly to Big Insurance to recover property damages, lost wages, and ongoing medical costs.
Motor vehicle accidents remain an undisputed leader when it comes to causes of U.S. deaths, killing nearly 39,000 people last year alone. Distracted driving is a significant contributor to those deaths; according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, it is responsible for roughly 10% of traffic fatalities.
With April marking Distracted Driving Awareness Month, the Tingey team is urging people to stay singularly focused on driving when behind the wheel.
“Because people drive so often, it’s easy to forget its potential for harm,” said firm attorney Bruce Tingey.
According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, 84% of drivers say they recognize the danger from cell phone distractions and find it unacceptable, but nearly one-third of these same people admit to having read or sent a text message or email while driving in the previous month.
“There’s a definite disconnect, which is why this annual awareness campaign is so important,” said Tingey. “It’s a chance for drivers to re-evaluate their driving habits and change them if needed.”
Tingey said that many of his clients in recent years have been hurt in accidents resulting from driving while texting.
“When a driver is going 55 miles per hour and takes their eyes off the road for five seconds, it’s like traveling the distance of an entire football field with closed eyes,” said Tingey. “This endangers not just the driver but other people on the road, and we have seen it lead to devastating damage, including traumatic brain injuries.”
Tingey said that his firm’s team of car wreck attorneys also sees frequent instances of accidents due to zoning out, drowsiness, fiddling with the GPS or stereo, talking to passengers in the car, eating and drinking.
Distracted Driving Awareness Month is sponsored by the National Safety Council. The observance promotes legislation, enforcement, public awareness and education in order to minimize distracted driving.
