Nevada ranks fifth in the nation for the most pedestrian fatalities-a fact not lost on Tingey Injury Law Firm attorneys. The firm regularly sees the tragic consequences of pedestrian accidents in the greater Las Vegas area. With a new decade underway, they are urging motorists and pedestrians to take measures to reduce pedestrian accidents in the coming years.
For 50 years, Tingey Injury Law Firm has been helping people who have been hurt due to the negligence of others. The firm’s accident injury attorneys help victims of car accidents, work injuries, slip and fall accidents, and wrongful death. They stand up to Big Insurance to help clients get the medical treatment and financial compensation that they deserve.
In the wake of the release of abysmal statistics on pedestrian fatalities in Nevada, Tingey attorneys are advocating for a state-wide wakeup call to reduce these deaths in the coming decade.
Last year, the Governor’s Highway Safety Association revealed that pedestrian fatalities were at a 28-year high nationwide. Later in the year, CarInsurance.org analyzed five years of data from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), revealing that Nevada had one of the worst track records for pedestrian fatalities. The state ranked #5 for the most pedestrian fatalities and #7 for the largest increase in pedestrian deaths since 2013.
Beyond that, a December 2019 report released by the University of Nevada, Las Vegas School of Medicine ranked Las Vegas as #21 for the most dangerous metro areas for pedestrian deaths.
Firm attorney, Bruce Tingey, said that these statistics deserve the attention of everyone on Nevada roads.
“We shouldn’t be leading the country in pedestrian deaths, especially when so many of these accidents are preventable,” said Tingey.
The Tingey team is urging Nevada motorists to curb pedestrian accidents by slowing down in pedestrian areas, removing distractions that could take their minds off the road, observing school bus rules, making eye contact with pedestrians before crossing or turning, and avoiding driving under the influence.
They are also cautioning pedestrians to stick to designated crossing areas, look before crossing a road, stay focused while walking (rather than looking at cell phones or the surroundings), wear bright colors or reflective clothing at night, avoid alcohol, and ensure that drivers see them before walking across an intersection.
Tingey said that these cautions sound basic, but they are often neglected. He also said that any experienced Las Vegas traffic accident attorney can attest to the fact that they are especially relevant on the Las Vegas strip.
“Tourists and pedestrians are trying to navigate a new area and take in the sights, so situational awareness is often down,” said Tingey. “Add to that high traffic-both foot and motor vehicle-and the influence of alcohol as people leave casinos and bars inebriated. The results can be devastating.”
