Based on challenges their clients have faced due to brain injuries, leading Las Vegas law firm urges steps to identify these often-elusive injuries early
Las Vegas, NV (PRUnderground) March 20th, 2020
Attorneys at Tingey Injury Law Firm frequently see the devastating effects of brain injuries on their clients. With March marking Brain Injury Awareness Month, they are seeking to spread the word about the importance of early detection to mitigate these injuries.
For over five decades, Tingey Injury Law Firm’s accident attorneys have provided legal representation and counsel to victims of injury accidents in the greater Las Vegas area. They advocate for victims of auto accidents, wrongful death, work injuries, premise injuries, and dog bites, helping them receive the best medical care and recover property damages, lost wages, and medical bills.
As attention turns to brain injuries in honor of the annual March observance, the Tingey team is urging accident victims to be vigilant about brain injury risks.
“There are a lot of misunderstandings about brain injuries,” said firm attorney Dean Tingey. “People may assume that they don’t have one just because symptoms don’t present immediately.”
Tingey said that it is not uncommon for car accident victims to walk away from the crash without any symptoms, only to have brain injuries manifest a few days or even weeks later.
Brain injuries are commonly caused by falls, car accidents, sports injuries, and blasts (for military members). They can result in mild concussions with headaches or more severe injuries that cause depression, seizures or impaired motor function.
Tingey said that another problem is widespread misunderstanding about the cause of brain injuries.
“There’s a common assumption that if people don’t hit their head then they don’t have a brain injury,” said Tingey. “A jolt to the head and neck can cause these injuries-even if there was no direct impact to the head.
Tingey Injury Law Firm’s experienced team of traumatic brain injury lawyers is spreading the word to Nevadans that the best thing they can do is seek direct medical attention after an injury accident-even if they aren’t showing symptoms.
“The injuries may escalate and have serious and irreversible effects if they are not assessed immediately,” said Tingey.
Doctors can evaluate patients using the 15-point Glasgow Coma Scale to gauge the severity of the injury. They can also perform CT scans and MRIs as needed.
Those who have sustained brain injuries should be monitored closely for worsening symptoms. If a physician believes the damage is mild, patients may be sent home under the supervision of a loved one or friend.
More severe cases must be stabilized in a hospital setting where physicians can ensure adequate blood supply and oxygen. In some cases, secondary brain damage should be treated with medications (such as anti-seizure drugs and coma-inducing drugs when the oxygen to the brain is limited). Surgery may also be required.
Tingey said he hopes the firm’s efforts, combined with those of other Brain Injury Awareness advocates, can help head off preventable effects of these injuries.
“The stakes are high, and awareness is key,” said Tingey. “Too many people misunderstand the symptoms and proper treatment for brain injuries, and we would like to change that.”
