North Carolina Hip-Hop Artist Self-Reflects on Quarantine, Redemption, and Faith

Local hip-hop artist theDeeepEnd will release his latest project, “In My Head,” on Bandcamp on December 9, then to all major streaming services on December 25.
Malcolm Brown is theDeeepEnd, also known as North Carolina’s Superman, able to swing from emceeing a song one minute to producing hits for another artist the next. As he writes and produces his work, it’s clear Brown is one of the most talented artists in the Triangle hip-hop scene, if not all of North Carolina.
“In My Head” is an auditory representation of Brown’s self-reflection since the COVID-19 quarantine began in early spring. Each track showcases the growth, lessons, and views he’s generated during the lockdown. “Divide & Conquer” – inspired by J. Cole and NoName’s heated Twitter dispute – showcases the divisiveness of social media, while “In My Head” places Brown’s authentic self in the spotlight.
Bandcamp listeners will be the first to experience the auditory journey. “I wanted to reward my Bandcamp fans for their loyalty, by gifting them two weeks of exclusive listening before releasing on major streaming services,” says Brown. “I’m grateful for all their support and want to allow them a first listen before the rest of the world.”
With the project, Brown hopes to give listeners a taste of audible empathy and life lessons – highlighting the universal struggle. The project encompasses theDeeepEnd’s feelings regarding redemption, learning, healing, recalibration, and faith in God. “In My Head” was mixed and mastered by Brian Kidd of 1Sound1Vision. All songs were produced by Brown, except for “4 The Homies” and “In A Cell”, produced by DJ Fredo. A video for “Uplift.Uproot” was released on November 25, ending with a visual snippet from “Loading Music”, the first track off “In My Head”.
In 2017, Brown released his first project, “Think Good Thoughts”. Following in 2019, he released “Verano” at the end of the summer. The summer sounds and production mixed with his usual honesty and confident arrogance garnered press from North Carolina’s Indy Week and CLTure. 2020 began with Brown’s first beat tape release in “Northern Lights”, and his spring EP, Calm (2018), soon followed.
Performing at nationally-renowned festivals such as Hopscotch Festival, the Art of Cool Festival, and Beats N Bars Festival, Brown has taken the stage alongside Big K.R.I.T., Kooley High, NoName, and Oddisee. He has been featured in UPROXX, Indy Week, CLTure, Dead End Hip Hop, and other prominent music blogs.
