The Plant-Barked Story: A Tribute To Our Beloved Sookie

If you love dogs as much as we do, then you already know that nutrition is key to a healthy life. Just like people, dogs thrive on wholesome diets, but diet alone isn’t always enough to guarantee a long, healthy life.

Our American Bulldog, Sookie, was just eight years old when she was diagnosed with bone cancer in January 2019. When we found out, Alixandra and I were absolutely devastated. She was our family, best friend, and ever-loyal companion, and we were determined to fight the good fight alongside her.

We removed her leg and did a full battle with chemo. In June 2019, she went into remission and we were overjoyed. But just two weeks later, the cancer came back more aggressive than before.

And two weeks later, we were saying our good-byes.

She left a huge hole in our hearts and not a day passes that we don’t think of her, her love for all things food and humans, and the happiness that only a dog can bring.

Coping with the loss of a dog can be just as painful as dealing with the death of a loved one. Some days I can’t help but feel like it was my fault. Maybe the food I fed her growing up wasn’t good enough. Maybe the treats had bad ingredients in them, or the tap water wasn’t clean enough.

Though we may never know the reason, we were determined to ensure that Sookie’s memory will never be forgotten.

Sookie’s Legacy Lives On in Plantbarked.

Alixandra and I founded PlantBarked to create something healthy and fun in Sookie’s memory. She loved other dogs just as much as she loved people, so we could think of no more fitting way to honor her than allow her to help other pups live better lives.

Sookie is the logo of our brand (I always knew she was destined for a modeling career) and the backbone of our company. We created a treat we knew she’d devour, one that we would never feel guilty about when indulging her.

She gave us so much during her life, and now we’re giving back: A portion of the proceeds from our sales will go to help dogs in need through various animal charities. Though no one will ever be able to replace our beloved Sookie, we believe that every dog and its family deserve to enjoy a long, happy, healthy life together.
