Inclusion with the International Association of Top Professionals is an honor in itself, only a few members are selected for the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award. Tanya M. Smith was selected for the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award for her outstanding service to our great nation and for her diverse education and dedication to her civilian work which extends beyond two decades. Tanya has certainly proven herself as an accomplished professional and expert in her field, not only as a High-Performance Coach, but also as a global motivational speaker, workshop facilitator, and inspiring trainer and leader.
Prior to her role of CEO and Founder of Life in Quarters, Tanya retired from the US Army in November of 2016 after 24 years of total service. She began her military career as an Army Reserve Radiologic Technician. She resigned from her position as Director for New Jersey’s largest residential program for male juvenile offenders and decided to experience the Army on a full-time basis.
Her impressive repertoire of prior roles and duties included serving as a Silent Warrior with the Military Intelligence Branch where Tanya was placed in both traditional and nontraditional Army leadership positions. She was deployed to Bosnia, Herzegovina and Iraq in support of peacekeeping and combat operations. Her final position, she served as the Command Language Program Manager for the Army’s largest unit of assigned linguists. She oversaw the training and development for over 350 linguists in 14 different language disciplines.
Life in Quarters, is a leadership and training consultancy that has offices in Upper Marlboro, MD and Springfield, VA. The company offers services globally and in all 50 states. Services include focused, insightful and empowering training, facilitating groups, seminars and workshops. They aid in coaching executives and professionals to maximize their potential by focusing on personal growth and professional leadership development. In addition, they offer non-financial pre-retirement mentoring and coaching for retiring and transitioning service members. Tanya says she “blends her formal education, success as a military leader, civilian work experience, and John Maxwell’s teachings to help her clients unleash their untapped leadership potential and develop themselves personally and professionally one quarter at a time.”
Tanya’s civilian education includes Associate degrees in Spanish, Intelligence Studies, and Applied Science. She earned a Bachelor Degree in Liberal Arts and a Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership. She also completed the University of Pennsylvania’s Master Resiliency Trainer Certificate program and Cornell’s Executive Leadership Certificate programs in High Performance Leadership and Executive Leadership. Committed to lifelong learning, she is currently pursing her doctorate in organizational leadership.

Throughout her remarkable career, Tanya has received numerous awards, accolades and has been recognized for her outstanding leadership and commitment to the industry. This year she will be considered for an exclusive feature in TIP (Top Industry Professional) Magazine by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP). In past years she was featured as a Woman Achiever with the International Women’s Group and recognized as an Influencer by the International Association of Women. She is also a coauthor in Camouflaged Sisters: Leadership Through the Eyes of Senior Military Women Leaders (Amazon Best Seller) which examines the grit, perseverance, and determination it takes to rise through military ranks as a woman in uniform.
Looking back, Tanya attributes her success to her experience, disciplined mission focus, mentors she has had along the way, and staying passionate in all her endeavors. Tanya says she has been blessed, she loves doing what she is doing and feels this is just the beginning. For the future, she will continue to grow as a professional and wants to continue to influence peoples’ lives any way that she can.
