Sue’s Infinitees, a company that creates shirts with original visuals and catchy messages, has launched a new design featuring #EmbraceTheGray. The t-shirt seeks to empower women who have decided to transition to their natural gray, white, or silver hair.
“I created the #EmbraceTheGray tee for myself and other women who have decided to let their hair go gray,” says Sue Zeger, owner of Sue’s Infinitees. “I like my gray hair, which has added curl and texture to my hairstyle. I also didn’t want to give in to the societal pressure and the presumption that I should color my hair because it has begun to turn gray.”
Zeger decided to embrace her own gray when she was 49 (she is now almost 52) and she noticed her hair color transitioning from a dark brunette to a salt and pepper. When she opted to accept the change, people tried to dissuade her, which she found irritating and intrusive. Family and her close friends loved her choice, and she was grateful for the support.
“To color or not to color your hair is an extremely personal preference, and it needs to be guided by what makes you happy,” says Zeger. “If coloring your hair makes you feel good about yourself, definitely continue to do this. But if you’d prefer to ditch the dye, then don’t let anyone talk you out of transitioning to your authentic color.”
In researching online communities about women who have chosen to go gray, Zeger discovered a number of popular Facebook pages that echo the #EmbraceTheGray sentiment, including:
Gray is the New Black is a group which offers information about how women can rock their gray locks with fashion and hair care tips and also provides a community of support for women making this hair color choice.
Going Gray, Looking Great! is another online gathering place for encouragement and laughs for people on their going gray journey.
GorgeousinGrey is a Facebook page that offers beauty and lifestyle guidance, and is dedicated to inspiring women to embrace their authentic selves.
Gray is the New Blonde is a page that’s promoting a documentary about views towards women with gray hair, and also provides a supportive community for silver sisters.
“There is definitely a trend afoot with women who are welcoming their evolving hair color,” says Zeger. “The fact that there are active communities on Facebook and other social media channels is a testament to this attitude change toward going gray.”
Zeger’s #EmbraceTheGray t-shirt is available on Teespring.com as well as on her Sue’s Infinitees Facebook page. The shirt comes in XS to 4XL in either gray or black . The price is $19.95 plus shipping.
