Industry: Science

Author of the upcoming, Fringe-ology, discusses the challenges of reporting on paranormal subjects with Pulitzer Prize winning author Deborah Blum.

San Diego, CA (PRUnderground) April 7th, 2011

Skeptiko welcomes Steve Volk, author of the soon to be released, Fringe-ology, for an interview between Volk and Deborah Blum author of, Ghost Hunters. During the interview Mr. Volk discusses his approach to covering the paranormal, “I’ve always covered traditional topics in journalism. I’ve started off covering music and that ultimately veered into writing narrative non-fiction about politics, crime and courts. But what was always in the back of my mind was this family ghost story that I had grown up with, but as a reporter I thought the subject was taboo.”

Volk continued, “Over time, I started realizing that when we talk about paranormal subjects, we’re really talking about the big existential questions that people find themselves asking at 3 a.m. What does it mean to be human? Who are we? Is there life after death? Is there a God?”

Volk also discusses his recent interview with Deborah Blum currently featured on Skeptiko, “I admire Deborah Blum because, here she is, a Pulitzer Prize winning science reporter where the taboo against covering these sorts of topics is even stronger, and yet she went for it. She covered William James and the scientific search for the afterlife in her book, Ghost Hunters. So I felt like I really wanted the chance to visit with her and see what her motivations were.”
