St. Croix Leaders, David Johnson “Arrested” For AZ Academy’s Jail Or Bail Fundraiser

For the past six years, AZ Academy has haunted the steps of St. Croix’s most prominent residents, hauling them into a mock jail each May for their “Jail or Bail” fundraiser. This year, Cane Bay Partners VI, LLLP Co-CEO David Johnson was among the prisoners — on May 1, he was “arrested” and hauled into a cell at the academy. To make bail, he (and the other “prisoners”) had to ask friends, family, and anyone walking by for a donation that goes to AZ Academy’s scholarship fund.

Cane Bay Partners VI, LLLP Co-CEO Kirk Chewning participated in the fundraiser last year, and Johnson jumped at the opportunity. “When you can have fun and raise money for a good cause at the same time, it’s pretty hard to say no, even if it means heading to the slammer,” said Johnson. “The best part is that every dollar we raised went directly to help a child get the education he or she needs. A few of us here at Cane Bay have been taken ‘downtown’, and we can’t wait to do it again next year.” Johnson’s bail was set at $1,000, but he managed to raise over $2,200 by the end of the evening.

AZ Academy was founded in 1998 to assist a few homeschooling families in creating a space where their children could make friends and socialize. Since then, it has matured into a full pre-kindergarten through 12th grade institution, serving a diverse student body that includes gifted students, those with learning and developmental disabilities, and everyone in between. Small class size and a committed faculty have made it an essential part of St. Croix’s educational community.
