Series on Kickstarter promotes diversity and representation in children’s books
Washington, DC (PRUnderground) February 2nd, 2021
Soaring Kite Books has announced the official launch of their new children’s book series, which has just debuted on Kickstarter for pre-order.
Soaring Kite Books is a Black woman–owned company based in Washington, D.C., and founded by Ceece Kelley with a mission of creating children’s books that represent BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color). Statistics show that only 12% of children’s books feature Black main characters, and less than half of children’s books written about Black main characters are actually written by Black authors.
The “Georgie Dupree” children’s picture book series is their first series for kids ages 4-8 from Soaring Kite Books and features a spunky Black elementary student, a loving family, and classmates of all backgrounds and abilities. Titles planned for the series include “Drawn To Friends”, “Classroom Confidence”, and “Sharing the Stage”.
“As a small indie publisher, Soaring Kite Books launches our titles on Kickstarter for pre-order to fund our print runs because we don’t have the capital of a big, traditional publisher,” said Kelley. “This way you still get that level of quality you would get from a big publisher but with the attention and care of a small, Black-owned business.”
Kelley is committed to promoting representation for the BIPOC community. “When I was younger, there weren’t many books with people that looked like me on the cover. The people that looked like me in books were usually in the background, the classmate, or maybe a sidekick. I work directly with a team of editors, a designer, and an illustrator with full creative freedom to tell stories about Black families like mine, the way they should be told,” said Kelley.
The Kickstarter campaign for the “Georgie Dupree” series aims to bring the series to people internationally. Backers will receive perks such as the first edition books, lesson plans for teachers, and, for the biggest supporters, the opportunity for your child or loved one to become an official Georgie Dupree character in the series. The pre-sale will be held from February 2, 2021, until March 4, 2021.
Kelley welcomes everyone to support Black History Month and help fund the first picture book series from Soaring Kite Books by pre-ordering or donating at https://www.supportblackstories.com.
