From October 19th to November 21st, 2020 in Long Beach, California, Shangrila Rendon shall attempt an officially approved Guinness World Record (GWR) by completing 34 full Ironman-distance triathlon races in 34 consecutive days (Total of 81.6 mi swim, 3,808 mi bike, 890.8 mi run).
Shangrila Rendon says: “Others race for achievement, for me it’s about fulfillment. I’m fulfilling my personal dream. Making a positive global impact.”
Shangrila Rendon is doing this to empower women, help children who are underprivileged and in trauma and assist those who are struggling with PTSD. With this event, Shangrila is raising funds for 4 non-profit organizations that support these causes:
1) Downtown Women’s Center (healing trauma, abuse, medical/clinical help, shelter, food, employment)
2) Children’s Institute (healing trauma, shelter, education, health)
3) Paws 4 Success (PTSD)
4) SJVRC (help children in Philippines and Vietnam)
Shangrila says: “Helping children is very close to my heart due to my past experiences. I had a horrible past. I was abused as a child from about 5 years old up until the age of 19. I was assaulted at 25 years old. Consequentially, I was diagnosed having PTSD and severe depression. Not knowing how to cope, I struggled with alcohol addiction and eating disorder for about 15 years. I was fortunate enough to receive help through outpatient programs, intensive and continued therapies, self-growth seminars and through sports. I feel blessed that I didn’t end my life when I had suicidal ideation at 17 years old. Even though I was a non-runner, non-cyclist, and didn’t know how to swim at 24, I became an athlete. I was able to turn my life around to become a Guinness World Record Holder (2015) as the fastest female to complete five Ironman distance races in five consecutive days.
I would like to pay it forward. I don’t want to have another child and woman go through what I had experienced. I want to make a difference and help others as much as I can. Not just in California, but all over the world. Let’s all accomplish something “Beyond Myself”. Together we can make a difference”
Amidst the many misfortunes occurring around us, the financial crises many are faced with and a health crisis at the forefront, we are all going through a period where it is easy to succumb to the feeling of uncertainty and overwhelm. Now, more than ever, we need people that can stand up and trailblaze a path that will re-instill and reignite positivity in our communities that will inspire and impact others to act constructively. To contribute to that goal, Shangrila has created the Beyond Myself Project that intends to make a difference for others, inspire and motivate action. Through this project, Shangrila wants to bring back the hope to communities and show it is still possible to achieve goals, plans, and make a difference.
Shangrila Rendon says: “I’m feeling so blessed that many have volunteered to be part of this project and at the same time excited to see it come to life. With the overflowing support and my hard work in training I can see this come to a successful fruition. It’s only a matter of time. Showing up for 34 days will surely test me physically and mentally. I’m ready to do whatever it takes.”

About Shangrila Rendon
Shangrila Rendon is a pro Ultra Triathlete and 2x Guinness World Record Holder (2015) as the Fastest Female to complete 5 Ironman in 5 consecutive days, (consisting of 12 mi swim, 560 mi bike, 131 mi run) and (2020) for the most Ironman-distance Triathlons completed by a woman within a year.
From walking for an hour every day to and from her first job in the U.S. at age 17, and spending 15 minutes on a treadmill before work at 19 years old, having no athletic background whatsoever, Shangrila Rendon transformed herself into a world class athlete. Her journey may have started slow as she was juggling being a medical device engineer full-time and completing a Master’s degree at the same time. However, she was fueled by guts and driven by pure determination to leave behind her horrible past.
She has been thru some dark times – abuse, eating disorder, PTSD, severe depression and alcoholism.
