Russian Icon Collection, an online gallery with a plethora of professional experience in the field, has presented a distinct collection of antique Russian icons depicting the scenes of the Resurrection and the Harrowing of Hades. As of today, the gallery features 26 authentic icons of that type, with most of them featuring border scenes with the Church Feasts of the liturgical year, the Holy Trinity, evangelists, and other holy images. All of the icons were collected by Oleg Kushnirsky, a seasoned and passionate founder of Russian Icon Collection. Thanks to his specialty in religious icons created between the 16th and 19th centuries, Oleg Kushnirsky managed to assemble highly rare valuables that now constitute the essential part of his comprehensive private collection.
The Resurrection of the Savior, which is often depicted through the scene of Christ descending into Hades (Hell), is an integral part of the Orthodox icon painting tradition. According to historians, the iconography of the Harrowing of Hades was formed back in the 10th-11th century. Icon experts also note that holy images of this type have many variations nowadays, and yet they share common features when it comes to composition. In the center of the icon, one can see Jesus breaking down the gates of hell. His mandorla, an almond-shaped aureola around an iconographic figure, illuminates the depths of the dark abyss with its bright light. The figure of Satan can be seen under the feet of the Messiah. There are also Adam and Eve standing on either side of Christ who holds them by the hands to bring them to heaven.
The Resurrection icons also depict many other characters. John the Baptist, David, King Solomon, and patriarchs Jacob, Isaac, and Jacob can usually be found on the left, while prophets and saints are shown to the right. The symbolism of such Christian icons is enclosed in Jesus Christ who completes the redemptive mission and claims victory over death. The Resurrection is one of the cornerstones in Christian history. For many believers, it is proof that they are united with Christ and will be granted eternal life in heaven.
Russian Icon Collection features items created in different parts of Russia. For example, most icons of the Resurrection – The Harrowing of Hades were painted by Palekh artists who were influenced by 17th-century traditions. Other pieces from the private collection came from the villages of the Vladimir (Kholuy or Mstyora) and Vologda regions, which were famous for their icon painting schools that substantially contributed to the development and growth of iconography. Right now, the icons are in the safe hands of dedicated professionals of Russian Icon Collection.
