Quarter of Brits Don’t Know Partner’s Salary says DiscountVouchers.co.uk Research

The latest research carried out by money-saving website DiscountVouchers.co.uk has shone a light on UK consumer spending habits. The poll has revealed that over a quarter of Brits do not know their partner’s salary details.

The latest research carried out by the website uncovered that 27.25% of respondents have no idea of what their partner earns. The poll also showed that twice as many women as men have private, hidden bank accounts, with 8% compared to 4%.

Furthermore the DiscountVouchers.co.uk research revealed that women lie more about their money – 43% said they have lied about what they spent on a new outfit. 17% of men admitted to this, with the main reason cited for the duplicity being a guilty conscience.

The latest DiscountVouchers.co.uk research was commissioned by the voucher codes website to gauge UK consumers’ spending habits and also discovered that 2 in 5 Brits admit to reading their partner’s personal bank and credit card correspondence. Conversely nearly 10% of people said that they simply don’t bother reading their monthly credit card and bank statements.

Psychologist Dr Penny Goldsbrough says: “These kind of actions usually result from lack of self esteem and a fear of the unknown – a lack of trust in your other half can prompt looking at their bank statements or hiding money away secretly in a private account.”

Dr Goldsbrough goes on: “Many female consumers take their influences from their maternal side, meaning that if their own mother had a habit of buying new dresses secretly, the daughter may replicate this process. Many shoppers find that they feel guilt for spending money but are nonetheless somewhat spendthrift.”
