Priority Waste Selected for 10 Year Contract as Westland’s New Trash Removal Service

City moves to contract new trash removal service for first time in five decades
Westland, MI (PRUnderground) December 14th, 2020
The city of Westland, MI recently approved a 10-year refuse contract beginning Jan. 1, 2021, with Priority Waste, based in Clinton Township. The decision signifies a break with Midwestern Sanitation. Though the company has changed its name over the years, it has serviced the city since 1968.
“Priority had the lowest of three bids at $38,449,174 for 10 years. Priority also offered the highest bid to purchase the Westland’s existing fleet of garbage trucks at $1.6 million, which will also eliminate any outstanding debt the city has in regard to the trucks,” a city spokesman reported.
Officials also said “residents will not notice any change to their garbage pickup.”
“Nothing will change,” Mayor Bill Wild said. “People will still use the same garbage cans that they have, the garbage will still go to the landfill in Van Buren Township, recycling will still get picked up on the same days and routes still aren’t going to change. People shouldn’t see any difference.”
Westland will no longer use its own fleet of garbage trucks.
Wild said, though the city still had about four years left in its contract with Midwestern, the company offered to step back if it would benefit the city. Paul Ruthenberg, the president of Midwestern who has a longstanding relationship with the city and many of its officials, will continue to manage the city’s account.
“It looks like there’s going to be a working relationship where Paul would still be able to manage the Westland account,” Wild said. “So, at the end of the day, Paul will be part of Priority Waste and will still be managing the Westland account. That made everybody comfortable with the arrangement.”
Ruthenberg said, “because of that longstanding relationship, Midwestern thought it best to “bow out gracefully.”
