What Does Prosperity Mean, And How Do Countries Achieve It?
Washington D.C. (PRUnderground) January 22nd, 2014
Is monetary wealth the only indicator of prosperity? What is the formula for prosperity? Free Think University has published a new course titled “Is Prosperity Good?” which explores what prosperity means and how countries achieve it (or don’t achieve it).
Why has America been so prosperous in relation to the rest of the world? Investigative journalist John Stossel hit the streets to ask people this question and few people seemed to know the answer. In this course experience, Stossel interviews experts to get to the bottom of how countries become wealthy. Among those weighing in are Bill Beach from The Heritage Foundation, economist Veronique de Rugy from the Mercatus Center, economist Hernando de Soto, economist Josh Barro from the Manhattan Institute, and others.
A case is made for the importance of the rule of law, property rights and limited government as keys to social and economic prosperity, as well as the promotion of environments that promote entrepreneurship.
“The longer it takes to open a business, the longer it takes to get really good ideas out there that produce higher incomes. It takes almost year in India. Just think of that. That country needs to innovate. It takes a year to open a new business. No wonder that country isn’t growing as fast as it should,” remarks Beach.
Economist Hernando de Soto talks of governments increasing economic freedom. He remarks, “It’s incredible what happens when you just change the rules of the game.”
“Free Think University is becoming the Khan Academy for The Big Questions of our day, as presented by our students,” notes co-founder Jim Van Eerden. “Economic prosperity to some means exploitation of the poor, and Stossel explores the case for and against this view in a compelling way.”
