An explosive new book called: Israel’s Most Wanted Man: Rabbi Eliezer Berland claims that the State of Israel has been waging a campaign of persecution against its ultra-orthodox Jewish population over the last decade, which has huge implications for peace in the Middle East.

Most of Israel’s ultra-orthodox community is pacifist, and refuses to serve in the Israeli army – a phenomena which has caused great alarm amongst the secular elites in the State of Israel.

Author Ben Brito explains:

“Starting in 2010, you had journalists, politicians, academics and even artists in Israel all sounding the alarm about the growth of the ultra-orthodox community, and openly calling for a ‘culture war’ against them. It sounds unbelievable, but Jews in Israel were coming out with statements calling the ultra-orthodox ‘parasites’ and openly asking how best to reduce their numbers.

“But the most vitriol was reserved for the Rabbis leading these communities, who were routinely portrayed as evil, violent and cultish. In truth, many of them simply stand for a very different approach to life, where there is far more emphasis placed on God than guns. Secular Israel is a highly militarized society, and this pacifist approach of the ultra-orthodox was seen as anathema. So, they decided to start going after the leaders of the ultra-orthodox world, to try to break their influence amongst their followers.”

In 2012, Rabbi Eliezer Berland held a ‘peace rally’ in Tel Aviv that was attended by thousands of people and widely covered in the press, where he called on the State of Israel to do more to help the people of Syria, and to throw away their guns. Very shortly afterwards, the first slanderous rumors about him appeared in the Israeli press.

In 2013, in the wake of the State of Israel’s growing persecution against the ultra-orthodox community and their Rabbinic leaders, Rabbi Berland decided to leave Israel. Over the next three years, the State of Israel spent millions of dollars chasing Rabbi Berland across four different continents, as he continued to make headlines around the world.

Finally, in 2016 the 80-year-old Rabbi Berland decided to return to Israel, to try to clear his name. Once he was behind bars, the Israeli authorities refused to allow him life-saving treatment for his serious cancer until he agreed to ‘confess’ to crimes he’d never committed.

Brito continues:

“There’s no question that Rabbi Berland is a polarizing, highly-controversial figure. There is no individual in the State of Israel today who is more revered by certain parts of the community – or more reviled and hated by others. For hundreds of thousands of people in Israel, Rabbi Berland is a messianic figure, and a miracle worker. But to the State of Israel, he’s seen as an even bigger existential threat than a nuclear Iran, and they were willing to stop at nothing to try to neutralize him.”
