Nazis and Nudists is an Award-Winning Memoir That Draws Parallels Between Then and Now

Is it happening all over again?

First, local media picked up on his 1972 interview with Bernie Sanders, the presidential hopeful’s initiation in print. The book describes Haldane sitting next to the young mop-haired politico as he watches himself on TV for the very first time! Next the book received a spate of glowing reviews and was named nonfiction runner-up in the 2016 Maxy Awards honoring the year’s best indie writing. And now it’s raising uncomfortable questions about whether history is repeating itself.

“Wonderful is a good word for this memoir,” wrote journalist Paul La Rosa, who’s written his own journalism memoir.

More than anything, “Nazis & Nudists” is the personal saga of a young man who got so lost in the nether regions of an era that he barely found his way home. Haldane eventually discovered his “green leafy space” on the shores of a distant Philippine island with the woman of his dreams. En route, though, he traversed some rocky terrain from the cluttered newsroom of the Berkeley BARB to the disintegrating halls of the Los Angeles Times in its waning days. He also encountered such iconic purveyors of the time as a grandfatherly Walt Disney, a young bodybuilding Arnold Schwarzenegger, Charles Manson’s lawyer who got murdered for his troubles, Timothy and Joanna Leary at the gates of hell and American terrorists with stolen identities fixing to take the country down.

The author is available for interviews on a variety of topics including whether it’s all happening again.

David Haldane’s career in journalism has spanned more than four decades, beginning as an underground reporter for the Berkeley BARB and culminating in twenty-three years as a Los Angeles Times staff writer. Currently he lives in Joshua Tree, California, where he reports for a local radio station. His work has appeared in numerous publications worldwide including Los Angeles Times Magazine, Orange Coast, Penthouse and Salon.
