Addressing the Opioid Crisis Head-On, the MOTHER Program by The High Risk Pregnancy Center in Las Vegas is Championing a Comprehensive Approach for Healthier Moms and Babies

Las Vegas, NV (PRUnderground) November 6th, 2023

The High Risk Pregnancy Center (HRPC) in Las Vegas offers an innovative program in response to the escalating opioid crisis. The MOTHER (Maternal Opioid Treatment Health Education Recovery) Program, a cutting-edge approach to combat opioid use disorder (OUD) in pregnant and postpartum people, is driving substantial changes in opioid treatment and maternal care.

In the face of a national opioid epidemic, the need for safe and effective solutions for pregnant persons battling OUD is greater than ever. Mental health and substance use disorders are among the most undertreated medical conditions in the United States. HRPC is filling this dangerous gap through the MOTHER Program, leveraging a medication-assisted treatment model designed specifically for pregnant individuals.

“Drug overdose is the leading cause of death during pregnancy and postpartum. The MOTHER Program was implemented to address this devastating crisis. We’re striving to break through barriers that challenge the care for pregnant people with OUD.” said Dr. Farzad Kamyar, M.D., a leading clinician at HRPC.

Since its initiation in June 2018, the MOTHER Program has distinguished itself as the only program in Nevada that provides medication-assisted treatment for pregnant and postpartum individuals using a collaborative care model. The program offers a holistic approach to care involving collaboration between maternal-fetal medicine (MFM) subspecialists, behavioral health providers, and patients. It also includes regular psychiatry sessions for co-occurring mental health issues, counseling, peer recovery support services, and advanced MFM care for pregnancies.

Dr. Kamyar continues, “Our program embodies a patient-centered team that uses shared care plans to deliver effective collaborative care. Combining medication-assisted recovery services with behavioral health and MFM expertise in a single care environment can deliver improved access, enhanced clinical outcomes, and increased patient satisfaction.”

The MOTHER Program has demonstrated an impressive track record of successful outcomes. Over 90% of patients maintain sobriety from illicit opioids. Additionally, over 90% of  infants did not require medication for neonatal withdrawal syndrome, did not need transfer to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and were delivered at term and not prematurely. 100% of patients and infants who tested negative for illicit opioid use were able to stay unified after delivery.

“We understand that opioid use disorder is a disease, and we’re here to help clients through their recovery process and provide the support, care, and resources they need. Empathy, compassion, and no judgments are pillars of delivering care.” Dr. Kamyar emphasized.
