Meet Rebecca Bloomfield: The Photographer Who is Changing the Conversation Around the Way Society Celebrates Women’s Choices

When it comes to women, there is a particular trajectory of milestones one is expected to achieve by certain ages. Get married, have children, perhaps a successful career, grandkids, the works. However, millions of women decide every day to take an alternate route outside the traditional norms to achieve their happiness and feel whole without societal constructs. Unfortunately, those women who choose to be single or without children are often stigmatized, and their accomplishments of entrepreneurship or homeownership are often overlooked or uncelebrated — until now.

Rebecca Bloomfield is a successful photographer, entrepreneur, daughter, friend, aunt, and sensational human being. At 40 years of age, she is unmarried, without children, and thriving. As she set out to purchase her own home for the first time, she found herself contemplating the way society celebrates the decisions of modern women. Think about it – how often are there “new business showers” or “new home registries” for women? The unfortunate truth is that outside of marriage and children, society views the accomplishments of women as subpar, but Rebecca Bloomfield is on a mission to change that.

As a photographer and visual storyteller, Rebecca captures emotions, memories, moments, and milestones to be cherished for generations to come. When she set out to purchase her home, it dawned on her to change the narrative around women’s choices and take action to usher in a new era of inclusivity and celebration of choice. To begin to shift the narrative, Rebecca created self portraits in the ubiquitous engagement photo style, and created a wedding website to announce the big commitment, complete with a registry. The site is an unexpected symbol of change and progress for women everywhere.

“Our culture celebrates marriage & children in a way that it doesn’t celebrate other life choices, and it can feel isolating to desire let alone explore a life path that doesn’t prioritize either.  Creating these images was a way for me to process and express those feelings.  The project evolved into the site & registry, which are usually symbols of having “made it” on some level.   It’s not that I think every life decision and milestone needs a registry, that registries themselves are problematic, or that my friends and family aren’t personally, and endlessly, supportive. It’s that our culture’s incentivization of a very narrow set of life choices is systemic. It’s automatic.  I hope that this project adds to the conversation about what is possible for women.” – Rebecca Bloomfield

Through proof of concept, dedication to inclusivity and acceptance, and unwavering commitment to challenging the societal status quo around women’s accomplishments; Rebecca Bloomfield’s purpose-driven vision has come to fruition.
