The lockdown has been hard to come to terms with for most people. It has been a wake-up call for many what freedom of movement truly means when they find themselves cooped up in their house, unable to leave. Even getting essentials like groceries and going to the doctor’s became a real challenge at times due to the strict nature of the lockdown. Though it has been a whole year, and vaccination is on the horizon, no one can deny the life-altering impact of the pandemic and the ensuing lockdown upon the lives of millions of individuals all over the world.
Your phone-a lifesaver during the lockdown:
During the lockdown, one thing that has become obvious is the use of cellphones as a tool for connecting and getting things done. Smartphones have been demonized for being a source of distraction, with hours being wasted playing a mobile game or on social media platforms. However, in the extraordinary circumstances that people had to deal with in a post-COVID world, the same smartphone has been a true lifesaver.
Here are just a few applications of the mobile phone that made the lockdown bearable for a majority of people:
·Connectivity:
Now, this seems like a no-brainer. Of course, mobile phones connect people, which is what their primary function is supposed to be in the first place. But under conditions of lockdown, this function was highlighted like never before. Be it work-related Zoom calls or holding a birthday party on a virtual platform, the humble mobile phone provided a suitable alternative to social gathering and physical contact. People were able to say emotional goodbyes to loved ones fatally suffering from the coronavirus, and frontline workers were able to reach out to their families via mobile phones. It was a dismal period with some semblance of positivity.
·Online shopping:
Mobile phones also made getting things delivered to your doorstep a breeze. 2020 saw a huge boom in e-commerce, and for a good reason. From food to clothes to medicine, everything could be bought online using your smartphone. You could even order online and pick up the products from the physical location without waiting or standing in the checkout lane and breaking coronavirus prompted social distancing protocols.
·Getting information:
There is no doubt that the outbreak of the pandemic was a bleak point for everyone. Being the first major pandemic, there was a lot of uncertainty and fear surrounding the entire situation. As unprecedented as the circumstances were, timely and accurate news of the facts relating to the virus as well as the safety precautions. Sharing of information on social media to increase awareness so people could behave responsibly saved countless lives. Sure, there were many conspiracy theories and fake news stories circulating on the internet as well, but for the most part, it did more good than bad to stay informed.
·Spreading the word:
When times were desperate, it was refreshing to see communities come together through the power of social media made possible by mobile phones. Even in the darkest hours, it was heartwarming to see people from all walks of life uniting to maybe start a crowdfunding effort to help a person struggling with dealing with COVID-19 or distributing masks in their neighborhood, or coordinating a drive-by to thank healthcare workers for serving their communities. All linked through their mobile phones, trying to adjust to a new normal.
Mobile phones get a lot of bad rep, but the lockdown of the past year has truly shown what a blessing it is and just how dependent we have become on our mobile phones.
