Industry: Home & Garden

After residents of the Fort Wayne, IN area experienced abnormally heavy rains, the threat of a flash flood became an immediate concern for the community. With certain regions receiving over 10 inches of water, Restoration 1 of Fort Wayne franchise owner, Jeffrey Premer, took it upon himself to ask Patrick Zaharako, City Engineer for the City of Fort Wayne, about flash flood preparedness measures.

Fort Wayne, IN (PRUnderground) November 15th, 2018

Jeffrey Premer, owner of Restoration 1 of Fort Wayne, has certainly seen his fair share of water damage in people’s homes. He has seen everything from plumbing malfunctions, pipe bursts, and the most dreaded of cause: a flood that has completely destroyed a home. So when a peculiar, sudden instance of heavy rainfall occurred in the Fort Wayne area, his first instinct was finding out what kind of measures the city has in place to prevent the disastrous flash floods that are uncommon for the area, but destructive all the same when they do occur.

That is how he came into contact with Patrick Zaharako, an engineer for over 25 years who has worked for the city of Fort Wayne for 5 years. After having served as Flood Control Manager for the city, he was recently named City Engineer.

In the interview, Zaharako discusses the City of Fort Wayne’s current measures for curtailing flooding, as well as the numerous informative measures that have been put in place for residents to stay informed on the progress of a flash flood. Additionally, the information and engineering that is currently utilized by the city is also aimed toward another highly probable water possibility: a river flood. Both can result in similar water damage disasters for home and business owners, as well as become dangerous in the blink of an eye. This is why being as informed as possible is the key to the utmost safety and survival.

For flash flooding and river flooding specifically, the city of Fort Wayne is part of the system RiverWatch. On this site, there is early flood detection notifications, in addition to continuous, real-time updating of the water levels and rain gauges. For further useful information on flooding in the Fort Wayne area, the City of Fort Wayne’s Utilities and Public Works teams offer plenty, as well as coordinated plans of action should waters rise with little to no warning. For emergency flood information, a resident can call 311, but for actual assistance they should call 911, the regular emergency number.
