Essen Health Care, a leading healthcare network and group practice for underserved communities in New York State, is doubling down on its mission to improve the quality and accessibility of healthcare in the Bronx. The move comes as Bronx County ranks last or #62 out of 62 counties featured in the 2022 Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s (RWJF) County Health Ranking Report that was released earlier this week.
“Over the last few years, Essen has significantly grown its coverage in the Bronx and has expanded its medical service offerings to the community,” reports Dr. Sumir Sahgal, Founder & Chief Medical Officer, Essen Health Care. “But as the RWJF report indicates, there is still much work to do which is why Essen is working to increase access to quality healthcare here and drastically improve patient outcomes.”
The RWJF County Health Rankings compares the health of all counties in the United States to others within its own state and supports coalitions tackling the social, economic, and environmental factors that influence health.
To help elevate healthcare outcomes in the Bronx community, Essen joined the #Not62 steering committee, playing an active role in building awareness about the area’s need for improved health. #Not62 is a campaign started by a coalition of healthcare stakeholders to raise the Bronx’s RWJF rankings and create a healthier Bronx.
“There are a number of addressable health factors and behaviors that can help this county improve its position,” said Dr. Sahgal. “Our clinicians are helping our patients recognize those factors and to make lifestyle changes that will boost their health and set an example for the larger community.”
Essen Health Care has become the largest private comprehensive, multi-specialty, medical group in the Bronx. The practice currently has 35 locations throughout the Bronx, and Essen Health Care is among the first practices in New York to have achieved the ‘Level 3 Patient-Centered Medical Home’ designation. Under Dr. Sahgal’s leadership, Essen has grown into one of the premier healthcare practices in New York City leveraging its Ambulatory Care, Urgent Care, House Calls and Nursing Home divisions.
