The University of Colorado Denver proudly announces the establishment of the Bhagwan Suparshvanatha Endowed Chair in Jain Studies. This groundbreaking achievement underscores the university’s commitment to advancing interdisciplinary education and global understanding. Made possible through the generous contributions of the Jain community, this endowed chair marks the first in Religious Studies at CU Denver, opening new avenues for students, faculty, and the public to explore the ancient and profoundly relevant Jain tradition, emphasizing nonviolence and ethical living.

The inaugural holder of this prestigious chair will be Dr. Steven M. Vose, a leading scholar in Jain Studies whose innovative research and dedication to teaching have already elevated CU Denver’s Jain Studies program to national prominence. Dr. Vose, who has served as the endowed professor of Jain Studies since the program’s inception, expressed his gratitude for the support and trust placed in him. “I am humbled by the faith of the Jain community and CU Denver,” said Dr. Vose. “This endowed chair allows us to expand our efforts to inspire students, colleagues, and the broader public to explore the wisdom of Jainism and its principles of nonviolence, social justice, and sustainability.”

Dr. Jasvant Modi, a key supporter of this initiative and a renowned advocate for Jain education, emphasized the broader significance of this milestone. “The Bhagwan Suparshvanatha Endowed Chair is a testament to the enduring relevance of Jainism’s values in today’s world,” Dr. Modi stated. “Through this program, students and scholars can engage deeply with the principles of nonviolence and ethical action, offering solutions to some of the world’s most pressing challenges. I am honored to contribute to this legacy of learning and hope it inspires future generations to create a more compassionate and sustainable world.”

The Jain Studies program at CU Denver is a vital part of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS), offering a diverse curriculum that integrates Jain perspectives on nonviolence, human rights, and environmental sustainability. Beyond academics, the program will host public lecture series, facilitate study abroad opportunities, and provide research grants, fostering dialogue and collaboration that extend far beyond the university campus.

Dr. Jasvant Modi, a gastroenterologist from Godhra, India, attended B.J. Medical College for his medical degree and underwent his residency in Chicago, Illinois. Following his immigration to the United States in 1975, he has been steadfastly dedicated to his profession, as well as his philanthropic endeavors. He and his wife, Meera, are passionate about their faith in Jainism and utilize their work in education and medicine as a means of sharing its tenets.
