Dr. Alan C. Hartford, Associate Professor of Medicine with the Dartmouth Geisel School of Medicine and Program Director of the Radiation Oncology Residency Program with Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, was recently chosen for the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award for 2021 given by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP) for his influence, proficiency and dedication to the Healthcare Industry.
While inclusion with the International Association of Top Professionals is an honor in itself, only a few members are chosen for the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award. These special honorees are distinguished based on their longevity in their fields, their contributions they have made to society and the impact they have had on their industries. Dr. Hartford is receiving this distinction for his nearly three decades of professional experience as an academic radiation oncologist, physician, and educator. Along the way, Dr. Hartford has demonstrated success in every leadership position he has held.
Before he began his career in medicine, Dr. Hartford earned his Bachelor of Science Degree from Stanford University and His Master of Arts Degree in Philosophy. He earned his Doctor of Medicine Degree from Harvard Medical School and joined Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital as an intern until 1993. Dr. Hartford completed his residency and fellowship in radiation oncology with the Massachusetts General Hospital and completed his Ph.D. in political economy and government from Harvard University.
Dr. Hartford’s impressive repertoire of roles have included working with the American Medical Association, serving on various national committees including its Council on Ethical & Judicial Affairs, Council on Long-Range Planning and Development, and Council on Medical Service, as well as on the AMA’s Board of Trustees. He has consulted in various positions with Dartmouth’s School of Medicine, the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons, and the NRG Oncology Clinical Trials Group. He is currently President-elect of the Council of Affiliated Regional Radiation Oncology Societies (CARROS) of the American College of Radiology.
Dr. Hartford’s key areas of expertise include but are not limited to: central nervous system oncology, genitourinary cancers, bone and soft tissue sarcomas, head and neck tumors, and lung malignancies, as well as advanced technologies such as intensity-modulated radiation therapy, prostate brachytherapy and stereotactic radiosurgery.
Throughout his remarkable career, Dr. Hartford has received many awards and accolades and has been recognized in numerous publications and magazines worldwide for his outstanding leadership and commitment to the profession. In 2020 he graced the front cover of TIP (Top Industry Professionals) Magazine and was featured on the famous Times Square Billboard in NYC. For 2021, he is being considered for the International Healthcare Hero Award. In past years, Dr. Hartford earned the Castle Connolly Medical’s title of one of America’s Top Doctors, recognitions in Marquis Who’s Who in America and Marquis Who’s Who in the World, and the title of Fellow of the American College of Radiology, as well as a number of research fellowships with medical institutions.
In addition to his successful career, Dr. Hartford is a contributor to multiple articles and scientific reviews that have been featured in prestigious medical journals. He also has written creative works such as “First Days of August,” a novel written under the pen name Alan Froning. He is affiliated with the American Society for Radiation Oncology, The American College of Radiology, the American Medical Association, the Radiological Society of North America, and numerous state medical societies.
Looking back, Dr. Hartford attributes his success to his perseverance, to his mentors from whom he has learned so much in knowledge and wisdom, and to God’s mercy and grace. When not working, he enjoys traveling, playing jazz piano, and spending time with his family. For the future, he hopes to continue providing excellent care to all his patients, supporting the growth of our next generation, and creating a positive impact in the larger world.
