Crowdfunding campaign being used to finance the spin-of pilot of ‘QT’ digital series
Los Angeles, CA (PRUnderground) May 20th, 2021
The creatives behind ‘QT’, a digital series, written, produced and directed by Tamieka Briscoe, launched a GoFundMe campaign on March 26, 2021, to finance the spin-off pilot of the series, which will be filmed in Los Angeles Memorial Day weekend. The crowdfunding campaign became a movement, and the team was able to exceed their goal of raising $40,000 in 40 days. The team was able to garner support mostly from fellow creatives on the Clubhouse app.
‘QT’ debuted in 2020, and is currently streaming on various platforms. The series depicts millennials living during the global pandemic and how they navigate dating, careers, and friendships in the “new normal”. The first two seasons were filmed remotely, while adhering to social distancing guidelines. The original series employed a cast and crew made up of mostly people of color and was financed by Briscoe. When she decided it was time to take the project to the next level, she collaborated with fellow filmmaker and the series Consulting Producer, Shakesha Williams, to spearhead the crowdfunding campaign. The two decided to leverage Briscoe’s Clubhouse popularity and growing community to launch the campaign. This strategy proved to be successful. Over 400 donors supported the campaign across multiple payment platforms. Strategies like silent auctions, a live Clubhouse and Facebook telethon, and many other virtual events took place in order to get the team across the finish line.
When the cast goes into production of the highly-anticipated spin-off series Memorial Day weekend, most of them will be meeting their co-stars in person for the first time, as the prior two seasons were filmed remotely.
“I am humbled and extremely grateful for the support we received for this project. Crowdfunding was terrifying and daunting at times, but I took a leap and there were over 400 people there to catch me. I am thankful for my Clubhouse co-moderators who not only contributed, they also used their platforms to help elevate my voice to ensure the success of the campaign. My family, friends and complete strangers also came together and contributed to the success of the campaign. I may have been the face of the campaign, but every donor and supporter is responsible for the rapid success of this crowdfunding movement. The best part is that I have been able to reach back into the same community to hire new members of our team,” said Briscoe.
“Working with Tamieka has been amazing,” says Williams of her time as Crowdfunding Manager. “The way she unified the filmmaking community on Clubhouse and rallied people from all walks of life is something to behold. History has been made and it is clear that independent filmmakers have a new way to get funding without waiting for Hollywood to green light their projects.”
