ComStar International Offers Low-GWP (Global Warming Potential) Retrofit Refrigerants

In light of the recent enactment of the American Innovation and Manufacturing (AIM) Act into law authorizing the phasedown of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) refrigerants over 15 years, ComStar International, Inc., proudly offers a line of low GWP (Global Warming Potential) retrofit alternatives.

The law, signed on December 27, 2020, begins a phasedown that will be administered by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). It requires the EPA to implement an 85 percent phasedown of the production and consumption of HFCs by 2036.

“ComStar wants to make it easy to change refrigerant systems to comply with the new law. The EPA may take a number of different paths to achieve the phasedown, including production and consumption allowance, banning high GWP HFCs in certain applications and restricting high-GWP virgin refrigerant to service existing systems.

“Based on history, service gas availability problems and higher prices can be expected as the phasedown progresses. Therefore, retrofitting existing systems operating with high GWP refrigerants (R22, R410a, R404A and R507) with ComStar’s lowest GWP refrigerants now is a fast and economical option to meet the reduced emission regulations,” said ComStar President Joyce Takiguchi.

The AIM legislation allows the EPA to set the following production and consumption levels (percentages represent the 2011-2013 annual average production and consumption levels):

• 2023: 90%

• 2024 through 2028: 60%

• 2029 through 2033: 30%

• 2034 through 2035: 20%

• 2036 and beyond: 15%.

California has already initiated regulations that require the use of low-GWP refrigerants and additional states and the federal Government are expected to follow.
