Compost Crew hits new highs in tonnage and customers in 2024

Compost Crew Inc., A Benefit Corporation announced its annual results for 2024, which saw the company’s business grow significantly from the prior year. The company collected almost 26 million pounds of food scraps in 2024, an increase of roughly 30% over its 2023 total. The company also exceeded 20,000 homes serviced for the first time, placing Compost Crew among the largest dedicated food scrap recycling companies in the country.

The commercial business at Compost Crew was a key component of the company’s rapid growth, thanks in part due to changes to Maryland law at the start of 2024 that required more organizations to divert their food scraps from landfill. New regulations for waste diversion in the District of Columbia also played a role. Among others, Compost Crew entered into a new collection contract with organic grocer Sprouts Farmers Market and saw further expansion in strategic commercial accounts. For example, Prince William County Schools added six more schools to its composting program and INOVA also expanded the number of hospitals composting with Compost Crew.

“At Sprouts, we love working with our local communities and are excited to partner with a local food waste recycling partner to service eight of our DMV locations, said Natasha Tofil, Environment Compliance Manager at Sprouts Farmers Market. “Working with Compost Crew allows us to communicate directly with our partner which means faster service for our stores.”

Compost Crew produced and distributed approximately 10,000 bags of Farm Feast compost in the first full year that this product was available. Farm Feast is a high-quality compost made from local food scraps and other organic materials. The product is currently sold in five-pound bags and in bulk to farmers and landscaping companies. The company also opened up two more Compost Outposts® to support municipal composting programs with the City of Greenbelt and the City of Edmonston. The Outpost in Greenbelt was developed in partnership with Trinity Assembly of God and the one for Edmonston was developed together with ECO City Farms. This brings the total number of Outposts in operation to six.

Last summer, Compost Crew acquired Key City Compost, a food scrap composting company based in Frederick, Maryland. In addition to taking over the weekly collection for several thousand residential and commercial customers, Compost Crew has now expanded into sales of compostable liners, tableware, cups and other sustainable products through the KeyCompostables storefront.

Compost Crew finished 2024 with more than 70 full-time employees on staff and boosted wages for drivers and helpers in 2025, part of its mission to provide good paying jobs to all employees. Compost Crew now operates a fleet of over 40 vehicles. The company has continued to pursue a variety of innovations in the food scrap collection business. Compost Crew continued its work as the vendor for the District of Columbia curbside composting program.  In a survey of program participants, 98% of respondents indicated that they were satisfied or very satisfied with the quality of food waste collection services.

“Compost Crew was delighted to hit the milestone of 20,000 customers in 2024, but we still have a long way to go,” said Ben Parry, CEO of Compost Crew. “Hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses in the DMV still send their food waste to the landfill or incinerator, which gives us an opportunity to do even more in 2025.”
