Cliff Harris Nominated for the 2020 Pro Football Hall of Fame

Cliff Harris is one of the senior hopefuls for the 2020 “Gold Jackets” awards. The proposed breakdown of 2020 honorees would include 5 modern-era candidates, 10 senior nominees, 3 contributors, and 2 coaches,

Cliff was quickly nicknamed “Captain Crash” by his teammates during his time with the Dallas Cowboys due to his punishing hits and hasty pursuit of ball carriers. From 1970-1979, Cliff barely left the field and changed the way football was played. With Cliff Harris on the Dallas Cowboys, the team ranked in the Top 10 every year as long as he was on the lineup and many would refer to Harris as “one of the best free safeties in the 70’s”, making him a perfect addition to the 2020 candidate list.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame’s board of directors voted to allow for 20 inductees in 2020 as part of the NFL’s 100th-anniversary celebration. A four-day celebration will kick off on September 16, 2020. However, the senior winners will be announced on January 9, 2020.

Harris began his football career in high school, where he played quarterback, and eventually led him to Ouachita Baptist University, where he got a chance to play college-level football. He made a strong name for himself in the Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference from 1966-1969. Though he was left out of the 1970 NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowboys invited him to attend their training camp, and the rest was history.

Cliff Harris of the Dallas Cowboys led an impressive NFL career for 10 seasons. He appeared in 5 Super Bowls, helped the Cowboys win 2 of them, and was named in the Pro Bowl 6 consecutive times. Cliff Harris was also the first-team All-NFL player for 4 straight seasons by The Associated Press as well as the Pro Football Writers Association.

During his career, Cliff Harris not only made an impact on the Dallas Cowboys, but he also made an impact on football and the NFL as a whole. He is only 1 of 13 players in NFL history to be in 5 Super Bowls.

There is an award named after Cliff Harris – the Cliff Harris Award – which is given to the top defensive football player in the country that represents Divisions II, III, as well as NAIA colleges and universities.

Cliff Harris of the Dallas Cowboys was previously a finalist for the 2004 Hall of Fame.
