Baltimore, Maryland (PRUnderground) March 15th, 2016
To look at him, you might never guess that the dog could write.
As improbable as it may seem, Gimli, The World’s Greatest Dog, literary prize winning author of fiction, poetry and textbooks will be in Baltimore this spring on a tour promoting the Christmas 2016 release of his new book, Fuit Ilium.
Gimli’s best friend and touring companion, John Purvis, explains, “Gimli is used to some skepticism, but his writing is not really a mystery, although he occasionally writes mysteries. I mean his ability is easily explained. You see, the Dog writes using a 56” touchnose RuffScreen™ display.”
Gimli is a Cardigan Welsh Corgi who was born in the mountains of Gold Country in California. He now lives near the sea in Connecticut. He began writing short stories for his own entertainment. Mr. Purvis then read the stories to Gimli at bedtime. This habit led to the collection Working Ahead of the Herd and Other Bedtime Stories for Dogs. One of these stories, “Gyp”, was a flash fiction prizewinner in undefined magazine’s inaugural creative writing competition. Said undefined editor Cynthia Boiter, the story “defies more than gravity to lift us beyond the earth-bound places where most of us spend our days and nights.”
Gimli’s poem “Aleph-Null” took top honors in a Celebration of Mind competition honoring the lifetime accomplishments of the polymath Martin Gardner. And Gimli’s textbook, A Primer in Formal Logic, was introduced into Connecticut’s Bridgeport Public Schools by Mr. Purvis who taught in Bridgeport for five years by way of Teach For America after a distinguished career in the computer industry.
During the interview for this article, Gimli rested contentedly with his front paws outstretched and his hind legs frog-legged behind him. Although calm, he gazed unblinking out of a window in his Connecticut home, looking across Long Island Sound. “He’s listening to you,” Mr. Purvis assured, “but he’s looking for Gatsby’s green light.” When asked why Gimli wrote, Mr. Purvis paused and himself seemed to search across the Sound before answering in an unhurried, light drawl evocative of his South Carolina birthplace. “A dog, like man in his longings, howls not at the moon but at what the moon forever represents. Never mind that its woof and warp can never be known.”
