Numerous articles have been published lately about the trend of millennials seeking healthier lifestyles. Today’s consumers are more health conscious than previous generations. While the food industry has responded in various ways, the spirits industry has been slow to follow suit. Recently, though, makers of alcoholic beverages are producing products that do more than provide a buzz.
Some alcohol makers have made marketing claims about their vodka being gluten-free, which is irrelevant since all vodka is gluten-free. However, studies have existed for centuries illustrating real benefits of moderate consumption of alcoholic beverages: wine has been shown to decrease heart disease, lose weight, prevent diabetes and even slow down the cognitive effects of Alzheimer’s and dementia; beer is said to improve cardiovascular health, especially dark beers, which have richer iron and flavonoid content and antioxidant properties; distilled spirits can help raise good HDL cholesterol levels.
Most recently, alcohol manufacturers, including MillerCoors, Diageo and Small Batch Organics have released new lines specifically designed to meet this trend. Leading the charge is Bellion Spirits, with its new category of Functional Spirits and its first product, Bellion Vodka with NTX. Ten years and millions of dollars of scientific research went into the creation of NTX, a proprietary blend of FDA-approved ingredients, including glycyrrhizin (extract of licorice root.)
The U.S. Treasury’s Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) disallows alcohol manufacturers from making any health statements in the labeling or marketing of alcoholic beverages. Bellion Spirits, however, feels so strongly about the benefits resulting from the infusion of NTX into its beverages that it has filed the world’s first ever health claim petition with the TTB, demanding that the agency investigate and validate the health claims made by NTX researchers.
While the petition remains under review by the TTB, Bellion Spirits is continuing its quest to provide consumers with a smarter alternative to alcoholic beverages. Bellion Vodka with NTX is now available in Massachusetts, Kentucky, Illinois, Texas, Iowa, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Georgia and Nevada, with several more states expected to be added by the end of the year. The company has also begun development of its next product Dera Tequila with NTX.
