Banff Mountain Film Festival Announces Three REEL ROCK Films As Finalists

Leading outdoor adventure and climbing film producer, REEL ROCK, is proud to announce that three of their documentary films have been accepted by The BANFF Mountain Film and Book Festival, one of the largest and most respected mountain festivals in the world. The three films selected are Young Guns, Dodo’s Delight and Boys in the Bugs, all featured on the REEL ROCK 11 Film Tour, which is currently traveling to over 500 locations around the world.

REEL ROCK will join other filmmakers, authors, and photographers from around the globe showcasing their mountain stories at the festival in Banff, Alberta from October 29th – November 6th.  The three REEL ROCK films will be featured throughout the festival.

“When we started REEL ROCK, we set out to create a way for climbers to see films about other climbers – and now, in our 11th year, we’re honored to have our films nominated in the Banff Mountain Film Festival, what we consider one of the best outdoor film festivals in the world,” says co-founder and filmmaker of REEL ROCK, Peter Mortimer.

The first of the REEL ROCK films, Young Guns, features the new faces of climbing: 15-year-old Ashima Shiraishi and 16-year-old Kai Lightner – and will be showing during the festival’s Radical Reels, and is up for the People’s Choice Awards. The film chronicles the leaders of the next generation and how the duo is already taking the sport to the next level. A trip to Norway puts their skills to the test, and Ashima attempts to make history on a V15 boulder in Japan.

The next film produced by REEL ROCK, Dodo’s Delight takes viewers down the hatches for a madcap sailing adventure in the Arctic Circle aboard the good ship Dodo’s Delight. Join Sean Villanueva O’Driscoll, Ben Ditto, and brothers Nico and Oliver Favresse for a rollicking musical journey across open seas and up unclimbed big walls.

The final REEL ROCK film showing at the festival will be Boys in the Bugs that documents an epic journey and tale of friendship of elite-level crack climbers and world-class goofballs, Will Stanhope and Matt Segal. Viewers can laugh along as they go for broke on a four-year battle to climb a forbidding 5.14 finger crack high in the Canadian alpine wilderness of the Bugaboos.

“The films portray real, human stories in outrageous locations, filled with humor, crazy characters who are passionate about their sport, achieving some of the biggest successes in the climbing world,” says Mortimer.

Attendees of the festival can view the REEL ROCK films at the following locations: Young Guns will be screened on Tuesday, November 1st as part of the 7:30pm showing at the Eric Harvie Theatre; Boys in the Bugs will be screened on Saturday, November 5th at the Max Bell Auditorium; Dodo’s Delight on Saturday, November 5th at the Eric Harvie Theatre.
