As Schools Open, Tingey Injury Law Urges Vegas Motorists to Remember Rex’s Law

Rex’s Law, which was passed in June, is named for 13-year-old Rex Patchett, who was riding his scooter in front of his school when he was hit and killed by a driver exceeding 90 mph. Under the previous law, the driver who killed Patchett was only eligible for one to six years in prison, but Rex’s law raised the sentencing to 10 to 20 years.

Speeding has been called a “dangerous epidemic” in Nevada, where, in 2022, the Nevada Highway Patrol issued an average of 11 tickets per day to motorists driving at 100 mph or more. The year prior, they issued an average of 12 daily tickets for 100 mph+ speeding. This is a steep increase from 2019 and 2020 when they issued 7 and 6 tickets a day respectively.

Some have blamed the increase on the “Fast and Furious” movies, which have triggered an increase in street racing, and for carry-over habits from the pandemic, which made it easier for motorists to speed down streets cleared of the usual traffic. Another factor in the Las Vegas area is the easy access to exotic car rentals, which can encourage speeding. Regardless of the triggers, the stakes are high for school children and other pedestrians who depend on adherence to speeding laws to stay safe.
