Annica, a young witch who lives on One Creepy Street, is now thirteen years old and ready to start flying. She has her first broom, but like many first-time drivers, Annica does not fully appreciate the dangers associated with her new mode of transportation. Not long after Annica waves goodbye to her mother and flies away, she gets a text message: “WHERE R U AT?”
Annica’s mother had warned her not to use her cell phone when she flew, but it was too late. Annica, distracted as she typed her reply, spun out of control and crashed her broom. Now, stranded with her broken broom, Annica must work with the strange creatures on One Creepy Street to get her broom fixed and get back home.
The cautionary tale of One Creepy Street: Annica’s Broom, was inspired by author and father Lee Jordan’s own experience teaching his daughter to drive. When Jordan took his daughter driving for the first time, she climbed into the driver’s seat, put on her seat belt and then positioned her cell phone in her lap. After her father’s obvious displeasure, Jordan’s daughter coolly replied, “Oh, don’t worry, Dad. It’s on vibrate. I know better than to read the texts, but I still need to see who sent them to me!” Horrified by the nonchalant response of his daughter, Jordan realized that telling new drivers to refrain from texting was not enough – the dangers of distracted driving needed to be taught from a young age.
One Creepy Street: Annica’s Broom is the first in a series that Jordan hopes will help instill the dangers of texting and driving in young children.
“We need to make sure that our children truly understand the very real dangers of distracted driving,” says Jordan. “That process needs to start at an early age. My daughter knew that texting while driving was a bad idea. In fact I had told her the dangers many times, but she did not project the risk on to herself.”
Fearing that other parents were having the same problem, Jordan knew he had to act to help make our highways and our children safe.
One Creepy Street: Annica’s Broom is a whimsically illustrated story that not only appeals to young children of all ages but also teaches them valuable lessons such as:
· The dangers of distracted driving
· Why text messages can always wait
· How easy it can be to get distracted
· The importance of paying attention to the road AND to your parents
Lee Jordan lives outside Ft. Worth, Texas with his wife, 3 children, 7 dogs and 2 cats. His job as a commercial pilot requires a long highway commute. Jordan often sees drivers looking down at their phones as they swerve across the road, instead of looking ahead. He hopes instilling the dangers of distracted driving at an early age will help improve highway safety and potentially save lives down the road.
One Creepy Street: Annica’s Broom is available at Amazon and Barnes and Noble.
