American Pole and Timber Announces $500 Scholarship Essay Competition

American Pole and Timber is starting an essay competition in which $500 will be awarded to two winning students each Fall and Spring semester.

American Pole and Timber, a manufacturer and supplier of large structural timber products, is launching a scholarship program in which college students are invited to write an essay on a given topic (one topic each semester) related to timber products and/or timber construction. Two $500 scholarships will be awarded each Spring and Fall semester.
About the Essay and Competition
Most essay topics will be related to with building with wood – but not necessarily – and some will have a “green” dimension to them while others may focus on technology. American Pole and Timber’s scholarship team will not share their best topics but a few examples of possible topics are:
- What technology do you think will have the greatest impact on commercial building construction over the next 10 years?
- What materials solutions do you think will have the greatest impact on the longevity of outdoor structures?
The winners – 2 each semester – will be selected based upon:
- Originality of the idea(s) presented
- Reality of the idea(s)
- Overall presentation of the idea(s)
There are no restrictions on the length of the essays. Drawings or graphics are not required, although they would likely contribute to the quality of the overall presentation.
Accepting All College or University Students
The scholarship competition is open to students from any major or field of study. Eric Lincoln, Sales Manager at American Pole and Timber in Houston, TX, said, “We first planned to offer this only to students in construction and design fields, and they are probably they only ones who will enter, but we like the idea of leaving it open to everyone to see what kinds of ideas we get. We’re pretty excited to see what these young people submit.”
For now, the only requirements to enter the scholarship competition are:
- Students must be enrolled in an accredited college or university
- Students must be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours during the semester in which they submit their entry
