While the last decade has seen a proliferation of fitness technology — from wearables tracking movement and biometrics; to consumer apps, hardware, “connected fitness” devices and “smart workout” equipment delivering programming at home — what remains missing in the connected fitness marketplace is a technology that delivers a truly personalized experience that you would receive from a personal trainer, without the actual personal trainer.
Altis began as a conversation nearly two years ago between fitness expert and businessman Jeff Halevy — whose resume includes a bevy of businesses ranging from internet and insurtech to health club operation; serving as a coach and health director to Hollywood and Wall Street elites; a stint as a correspondent on NBC’s Today Show; and partnering with Michelle Obama on her childhood obesity initiative Let’s Move! — and serial tech entrepreneur Constantine Goltsev, an expert in AI and machine learning. The two began imagining how they could merge exercise science and computer science into a consumer technology that provided expert personal training at a fraction of the cost. Their brainstorming session quickly turned into recruiting world-class AI and Computer Vision teams, as well as renown athletic trainers, personal trainers, physical therapists, and orthopedic doctors to help build their concept.
The mission of the company is to increase the access to, and quality of, personal training. By removing the human component, and the associated costs and quality concerns through their technology, Altis will accomplish this goal.
With lead investment from PentaLab — helmed by Igor Magazinik and Talmon Marco, the team behind ridesharing app Juno and cross-platform messaging and VoIP service Viber, which were sold for a total of $1.1B — and other investment from leaders in consumer technologies, medicine, and sport science, Altis quickly closed its $2M seed round in August.
Altis will go to market in 2021.
