What happens when the rhythm of jazz meets the precision of science? A Tribe for Jazz is set to find out as it prepares to launch its groundbreaking Mobile Jazz Lab™ Pilot Program for the 2024/25 after-school programs.
Funded by the Battelle Central Ohio STEM Grant and presented in collaboration with Columbus Recreation and Parks – Center Without Walls, COSI, PAST Foundation, and Graves Piano, this one- of-a-kind after-school STEM program will immerse Columbus City School (CCS) students in the intersection of Jazz and STEM, equaling “The Sound of Science.”
State Senator Hearcel F. Craig awarded A Tribe for Jazz a Senatorial Citation, recognizing the significant impact of the Jazz Lab™ Mobile Pilot initiative. “The Jazz Lab represents a new innovation in the educational world that can introduce children to the culturally important and beautiful art of improvisational jazz while also providing a fun and engaging way to learn about STEM,” said Senator Craig.
The Jazz Lab™ Mobile Pilot will engage students, ages 9-14, from historically marginalized communities and expose them to the improvisational essence of jazz with the analytical rigor of STEM. As the first program of its kind for CCS, it will engage students weekly through hands-on experiences that enhance cultural awareness and highlight the presence of arts and STEM in everyday life.
“Jazz Lab™ Mobile Pilot is poised to revolutionize the after-school space,” says Stephanie Matthews, Executive Director of A Tribe for Jazz. “Students will dive into the science of sound, experience live jazz, and engage in STEM through hands-on activities like instrument engineering and virtual reality. This program is a bold step toward redefining how we inspire young minds, and we’re eager to see its lasting impact on students’ creativity, curiosity, and 21st-century skills.”
