As if the previously announced celebrations were not enough, it has just been revealed that a thousand-ship flotilla will travel down the River Thames on Sunday 3rd June to mark sixty years of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign. The pageant, which is expected to cost around £10 million, will stretch for an incredible seven miles and is to be made up of a royal barge – named the ‘Spirit of Chartwell’ – along with a vast array of boats, kayaks, other vessels and even a floating bell tower.

Comprising 10 sections, each headed by a music barge, the flotilla will also feature a selection of particularly well-known, and somewhat surprising, vessels. These include Eilean, a yacht made famous in the video of the Duran Duran song ‘Rio’, and the boat from which Winston Churchill and Dwight Eisenhower inspected allied warships ahead of D-Day in 1944.

In what Thames Diamond Jubilee Festival chief executive Michael Lockett has described as the largest event to have taken place on the river for 350 years, there is no doubt that the 2012 event is going to be an amazing spectacle. Mayor of London Boris Johnson has even stated his belief that there are many people even more excited by the Jubilee than by the Olympic Games coming to the capital.
