Cardiff City Council Taxi fleet to increase Wheelchair friendly Vehicles

Everyday life for a wheelchair user can become extremely difficult, this point is no more apparent than with transportation. Taxi’s can often become a problem for wheelchair users, with many not adapted to accommodate them.

However, Cardiff City Council has announced plans to substantially improve the usability of taxis. The idea is aimed mainly at making them more accessible for disabled people, by gradually phasing out narrow and low saloon taxi for the alternative larger, multi purpose van (MPV) style.

The MPV is a much better choice with many added features implemented purely with the user in mind, such as a ramp rather than steps, which could be a hindrance to any wheelchair user.

Out of more than 950 private hire cabs in operation, almost half of them are currently saloon taxis. The plans are to massively increase the numbers of wheelchair accessible taxis to create an overwhelming majority in the city. This would make life more pleasant for people with a disability, giving them a better chance of finding a taxi to accommodate them. The plans would also generate more revenue for the taxi owners, with more and more wheelchair users hearing of the news and choosing to book a taxi.

Despite the news, the plans haven’t yet been agreed so it could be a few years until they are fully integrated.
