UK Beats France and Greece as Staycations Take Hold

Report shows that the UK has eclipsed France and Greece to become second most popular destination with Brit travellers.

A new report buy the Association of British Travel agents (ABTA) has shown that the UK has eclipsed both France and Greece to become the second most popular holiday destination with British travellers in 2011.
ABTA surveyed 2000 travellers for their report and the findings were surprising. Spain, ever popular with UK holiday makers held on to the number one tourist spot with UK travellers in the converted 35 – 44 age bracket but the surprise runner up was the UK beating both France Greece and Italy in volume this year.
While the royal wedding no doubt boosted UK stay at home holiday numbers slightly another trend emerged that may also explain the numbers. Holidaymakers this year prioritised financial protection for their holiday over discount and deal hunting.
It seems UK holidaymaker confidence has been shaken by widely publicised collapse of travel firms like Goldtrail and XL and may be choosing to book in the UK as that seems to be the safest option for their money.
Director of mega.co.uk Russ Beech said “financial protection is something holidaymakers need at the moment, money is tight and people can not afford to risk losing cash if the firm they book with goes under. UK holidays seem a safer bet and until the economic climate shifts this is a trend we expect will continue and for a money saving website like ours more people looking to reduce their outlay is great news.”
Good news for the British tourist market but for travel agents and high street operators it is just another report signalling a bumpy ride is to be expected in 2012.
