Set in the fictional city of Woodland Falls, Dauntless is about a Kacey Alexander, a young woman who just found out that she was the heir to a magical legacy. After her friends are the victim of a sudden attack by a ruthless mercenary, she must learn how to master her powers. Gathering an army of unlikely allies, she must protect her city against villains who seek to raise an army and raze her city.
“I wanted to see a heroic female character who was strong enough to be weak,” explains author Thomas Atwood. “I wanted her to feel strong emotions and still keep going toward her goals. I wanted to see more characters like Buffy from Buffy the Vampire slayer and Katniss from the Hunger Games.”
Dauntless is a dark, action packed story filled with varied, unique and likeable characters. Opening with Kacey mourning her mother’s death, the action-packed narrative shows her thrust from a grieving child into the hero she was always meant to be.
In Dauntless, Thomas Atwood Jr explores current themes such as:
● The need for family and the pain of their loss
● Coming of age and the pressures of becoming an adult
● Standing up to injustice
● The dangers of objectivism
“I wanted people to understand the grief that Kacey feels in the lost off her mother,” Thomas Atwood explained. “I want the reader to feel her grief and empathize with her journey and learning to move on. Her journey of learning to deal with grief, yet learn to keep living her life, is something that I believe a lot of people can relate to. I also want to show how the friends we keep can become our surrogate family.”
Dauntless is Thomas Atwood Jr’s first novel and is intended as part of a larger series.
