CBCD Welcomes New Dissolvable “Tampons” that Kill Viruses

Scientists at the University of Washington have developed a dissolvable “tampon” that can be used as a delivery method for antiviral medication, such as those against the genital herpes virus (HSV-2). The “tampons” are made of an electrically spun fabric. “Each thread of the polymer is around 200 times smaller than a human hair, and the researchers have found that high concentrations of HIV-preventing microbicide can be interwoven into the fabric. Importantly, it also dissolves quickly when it gets wet, so it can release high doses of the medication directly to a woman’s vagina within six minutes.” (1) It should be noted that the new “tampon” is unlike standard tampons. Although the developers call it a “tampon,” it cannot be used for absorption discharges during the menstrual period.

In regards to its medicinal function, it is important to note that while HIV medications are the first to be used with the new “tampon,” scientists believe that other antivirals, such as drugs against genital herpes (HSV-2), and even contraceptives can also be delivered using it. (1) While the CBCD welcomes the news of the “tampon’s” development, the Center reminds the public that approval of this “tampon” for American markets by the FDA may take time. Furthermore, “even though the drug used in this original study already has US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval, some of the microbicides that could infuse the tampon are still undergoing clinical trials.” (1) Until these innovations become available, the CBCD recommends two natural, safe and effective, HSV-2 remedies that are also backed by clinical studies.

The Center for the Biology of Chronic Disease (CBCD) recommends that people infected with the genital herpes virus (HSV-2) take Novirin or Gene-Eden-VIR. The formula of these natural antiviral products was tested by Hanan Polansky and Edan Itzkovitz from the CBCD in two clinical studies that followed FDA guidelines. The studies showed that the Novirin and Gene-Eden-VIR formula is effective against the herpes simplex virus, and other viruses. The clinical studies were published in the peer reviewed, medical journal Pharmacology & Pharmacy, the first, in a special edition on Advances in Antiviral Drugs.  Study authors wrote that, “individuals infected with the HSV … reported a safe decrease in their symptoms following treatment with Gene-Eden-VIR.” (2)  The study authors also wrote that, “we observed a statistically significant decrease in the severity, duration, and frequency of symptoms.” (2)

Novirin and Gene-Eden-VIR are natural antiviral dietary supplements. Their formula contains five natural ingredients: Selenium, Camellia Sinesis Extract, Quercetin, Cinnamomum Extract, and Licorice Extract. You can also get herpes from an infected sex partner who does not have a visible sore or who may not know he or she is infected because the virus can be released through your skin and spread the infection to your sex partner(s).” (3)

What current treatments are available for herpes infections?

“Two types of antiviral treatments against HSV are available: topical and oral. The treatments include penciclovir, acyclovir, famciclovir, and valaciclovir. However, their effectiveness is limited. For instance, a meta-analysis of five placebo-controlled and two dose comparison studies evaluated the effect of aciclovir, famciclovir or valaciclovir on symptoms. The meta-analysis showed that oral antiviral therapy decreases the duration and the associated pain of an outbreak by merely one day.” (2). There are also natural antiviral products that studies show to be safe and effective in reducing herpes symptoms. Two of these products are Novirin and Gene-Eden-VIR.
