On October 7, the Palestinian militant group Hamas launched an attack on Israel, marking one of the most serious escalations in the area in several years. Hamas operatives breached the fence separating Israel and the Gaza Strip by land, sea, and air. Hamas rockets were shot as far as the northern part of Tel Aviv. As a result, at least, 700 Israelis, both civilians and military personnel, were killed, and over 2,000 people were severely injured and hospitalized. It has been reported that over a hundred Israelis were taken hostage by Hamas. Israel’s Defence Forces are currently battling Hamas fighters in southern Israel.

The first attacks occurred on the Jewish holy day Simchat Torah, which concludes the weeklong celebration called Sukkot. The violent confrontation also took place one day after the 50th remembrance of the surprise attack launched on Israel by Egypt and Syria in 1973 on another important Jewish holy day, Yom Kippur. The assault initiated the ongoing Arab-Israeli conflict, one of the deadliest and most devastating militant confrontations in the Middle East.
